A patient with COPD may demonstrate changes in respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, perceived exertion, walking tolerance, or recovery time during a smoke event.


Adjusting Rehabilitation Safely


When air quality is poor, clinicians may consider modifying exercise intensity, increasing rest periods, using indoor treatment locations, and closely monitoring patient response to activity. The goal is not necessarily to stop physical activity. Instead, rehabilitation may need to be adapted to the patient's current respiratory status and environmental conditions.


Energy conservation, pacing, breathing strategies, functional mobility training, and fall prevention can remain important components of care while reducing unnecessary exertion.


When Should a Senior Seek Medical Attention?


A noticeable change from a person's normal respiratory status should be taken seriously.

Increasing shortness of breath, persistent or worsening wheezing, significant chest discomfort, confusion, unusual weakness, or a concerning decline in oxygen saturation may require prompt medical evaluation.
